Constant Bit Rate (CBR)

Constant bit rate (CBR) is an encoding method that keeps the bitrate the same throughout an entire video. Simply put, it transmits data at a constant rate, regardless of the size and complexity of the files it processes. CBR is preferable in most streaming situations because the video content is encoded in real-time.

CBR is preferred in many streaming situations because it has been the standard in online video streaming for some time. Since it is so popular in the live streaming industry, constant bitrate is the most compatible option.

  • Ideal for time-sensitive streaming
  • Produces consistent results (i.e. if you set it to 1500 kbps, your bitrate will remain at 1500 kbps)
  • Historically popular
  • Widely compatible
  • Well-suited for multimedia encoding
  • Ideal setting for live stream encoding
